October 9
International Race between Sweden - Norway
Norway Lillehammer. October 9

Hansen and Eklund in the same team
Lillehammer,
The arch rivals Kenneth Hansen and Per Eklund had to bury their old disagreements for a day. In the team competition between Sweden and Norway in Lillehammer the two were fighting in the same team.

- But it will not be a habit, Kenneth grinned regarding the temporary co-operation.
- Although it is nice to end the season with this kind of race without any major demands. It’s fun to be in a team for once. Rallycross is normally a lonely sport.

For the second year in a row the Norwegians challenged the Swedes in a hill climb, where every one drives on time up the hill. In the 18 man strong Swedish team, with drivers from both rally and rallycross, was except Per and Kenneth also Lars Sällström, Michael Jernberg and Magnus Hansen.

The team competition in Lillehammer was as during the Olympic Games literally a real Norwegian story. The Norwegians won individually all classes as well as the team competition totally. Ludvig Hunsbedt was the fastest Norwegian and beat Per Eklund with 0,22 seconds. Kenneth Hansen was quickest up to the intermediate but suffered technical problems on the last meters and ended a long way down the result list. Martin Schanche was also one of the favourites who wasn’t in the top.

ERC Round 9
Germany, Buxtehude. October 2-3 1999.

Kenneth won the German round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship in Buxtehude.

Kenneth won the last race of the year in the European Rallycross Championship. With that he got a nice revenge for the misfortunately race in Norway when Kenneth both crashed heavily and lost the Championship to Per Eklund.

- Wonderful!, Kenneth laughs. It’s so good to end the season with a victory.

Kenneth managed to take the start from pole position after a hard fight with Norwegian Ludvig Hunsbedt through first corner. Thereafter Kenneth extended his lead to 50 meters and during the last laps he could just go on security. Hunsbedt came in on second place and the Czech Pavel Koutny on third. Kenneth is the only one to take a third ERC victory this year. The reigning champion Per Eklund had a bad day and didn't even qualify for the finals.

Kenneth’s nephew Magnus Hansen delivered the big news of the day. Magnus is the new European Champion in division 2! It’s the smaller category for Group N cars.

- It’s absolutely the best thing that ever has happened to me, Magnus cheers with tears in his eyes. Tonight we will celebrate!

Today Magnus came on second place after Norwegian Börre Biksrud.
Magnus plans for the future is to continue in this class and with his Citroen Xsara for at least one more year. After that the dream is to go to Uncle Kenneth's class, division 1.

SRC Round 5
Götene. September 11 1999

Kenneth Swedish Rallycross Champion 1999

To be able to win the Swedish Championship again has been Kenneth Hansen’s wish for many years. On his home circuit Kinnekulle Ring Kenneth did it. In front of close to 10.000 spectators Hansen took his ninth title. The hardest competitor Per Eklund won the race. Kenneth came in on second place, which was enough to secure the SRC-gold.
-I took it very easy, Kenneth says happily. My tactics to stay behind Per and not to make any mistakes was successful.
On the final laps Kenneth was close behind Per. In the last corner Eklund stopped completely hoping that third man Lasse Sallstrom should squeeze in front of Hansen.
-I had to give Per a push to get him going again, says Kenneth.
Lasse Sallstrom hadn’t any plans for second place at that moment as he just lost his power steering. Lasse had to struggle to make his car take the turn and get third place.
It was Kenneth Hansen’s ninth SRC-gold in rallycross. The first one he took 1986 in an old Volvo Amazon. During the years 1988 to 1994 he won seven titles in a row. The first five years in what we today call division 2. In the big category, division 1, Kenneth has taken the title twice, last time in 1994.
-It feels good! I have really fought hard for this in several years, Kenneth says. For a while it was only problems. To win the European Championship felt easier than to win at home. But now I have finally broken the spell and won my long-desired SRC-gold.

ERC Round 8
Norway, Lyngås. September 4-5 1999

Hansen to hospital after a big crash in Norway

Kenneth Hansen was taken to hospital after a bad crash in the A-final of the Norwegian round of the European Rallycross Championship.
The drama started when the leading Norwegian Ludvig Hunsbedt got problems with the car on the third lap. He should just go to the side and retire as Per Eklund who was just behind hit him. Michael Jernberg and Kenneth Hansen are at this moment on third and fourth place and have no chance to avoid an impact and crashes hard.

- After the circumstances I feel quite well, Kenneth says disappointed and shocked. I braked so hard that the pedal is stuck in the floor, but it didn’t help.
After the doctors recommendations Kenneth was brought to hospital with the ambulance for more detailed examinations. It was OK and Kenneth could return to his team later in the evening.

Per Eklund, who finally won the A-final easily as Hunsbedt, Hansen and Jernberg couldn’t come to the restart. Per secured with that also the 1999 European Rallycross Championship title.

Next and final round of the ERC will be in Germany first weekend in October.

ERC Round 7
Holland, Valkenswaard. August 21-22 1999

Hansen still chases Eklund

Kenneth Hansen still chases his archrival Per Eklund. Despite many overtaking moves Kenneth never managed to get past Eklund in the Dutch round of the European Rallycross Championship. Per defended his second place well through five hard laps in one of the closest races for a long time. With his second place Per extended his lead with two points to 118. Third place for Kenneth gave him 104 points overall.
Unthreatened the Norwegian Ludvig Hunsbedt won the 7:th round of the ERC. He led the A-final from start to finish in big style.

Kenneth, who had a perfect start from Second row, was quickly up behind the leading Ludvig. But from the outside Per steered in just in front of Hansen's nose. To avoid both crashing into the concrete wall Kenneth has to back off and let Eklund in on second place. After the finish Eklund was angry about Hansen's several "attacks" during the final. Kenneth answered that he had to take that if he didn’t go faster as that.

Next round of the European Championship is on Lyngås in Norway September 5. As being the penultimate race there will be a big drama when Eklund and Hansen will fight for the ERC-gold. And the Norwegians have never liked the Swedes to win on their home circuit.

SRC, Round 4
Haninge, August 14-15 1999

Hansen took victory in the SRC in Haninge

Kenneth Hansen took a superior victory in the A-final of the Swedish Rallycross Championship in Haninge in front of 8.000 spectators. The hardest concurrent Per Eklund was only fifth. With that Kenneth now leads the overall standings and has a golden opportunity to take his first SRC gold in five years.

- Wonderful, Hansen cheers after the finish. The car has worked perfect and the tactics as well.

Before the A-final a hard meeting between Hansen and Eklund was excepted, who stood side by side. In the first qualifying round the two had a tough and hard drive and it all seemed to be another one in the final.

But in the final race Per Eklund shot himself in the foot by making a jumpstart. Due to that he was forced to move one row back and had now chance in the restart. Kenneth Hansen easily took the lead from pole position. Morgan Antonsson and Lars Sallstrom followed him.

Kenneth could extend his lead when Antonsson couldn’t keep up the speed of Hansen. When Morgan went into the obligatory and slower alternative part both Sällström and Lars Larsson overtook him.

With his big lead Kenneth waited until the last lap to do the slower route. That was what also Sallstrom was supposed to do but to everyone’s surprise and to his own despair he forgot it. He was disqualified and placed last. Lars Larsson was second and Dan Andersson third.

Kenneth now leads the SRC on 45 points. Per Eklund has 35. The two is now the only one to have a chance for the SRC gold. Guess if it will be a close fight on Kinnekulle Ring on Saturday September 11.

ERC Round 6
Belgium, Maasmechelen. August 7-8 1999

Hansen won in Belgium.

Now is the fight for the European Rallycross Championship crown getting harder between the two Swedes Kenneth Hansen and Per Eklund. Hansen won today the Belgium round in front of Eklund. With that he scored some valuable points as only three races are left.

-Now I have him on my fork as we say in Sweden, laughs Kenneth after the finish.

Kenneth who qualified for pole position managed to take the start followed by the Dutch Jos Kuypers and Per Eklund. Eklund and Kuypers battled it out side by side through the first corner, where the Dutch finally had to give up.
Kenneth was leading the A-final from start to finish. Very comfortable it seemed. But it was more dramatic than one could know. On the second lap Kenneth started to lose rear wheel grip on his Citroen Xsara. He had to use all his driving skill to be able to keep a healthy gap down to the chasing Eklund.

- I knew I had to win. So guess if it was nice to see the finish flag, comments Kenneth.

If the leading duo Hansen and Eklund had a clean drive it was a wilder fight for the third place. The Belgian Jacques Franssen came out as the winner of that. He had to take a lot of punches by Jos Kuypers, who also got disqualified, for unfair driving. On fourth place was the Czech Pavel Koutny and the Norwegian Eivind Opland was fifth.

Per Eklund leads the ERC with 101 points and Kenneth is second with 89 points.

In the Hansen family the happiness were twice as big as Magnus Hansen, Kenneth nephew, won the smaller category division 2 and extended his lead in the Championship.

SRC Round 3
Strängnäs, July 25 1999

Hansen in top of the Swedish Championship

Kenneth leads the A-final of the third round of the Swedish Rallycross Championship in Strängnäs, which he also went on to win.

Kenneth Hansen won the third round of the Swedish Rallycross Championship. And at the same time he takes the lead in the overall standings. The spectators in Strangnas got to see a thrilling A-final in division 1 as the "big" boys fought for glory.

Michael Jernberg took the start closely followed by Kenneth Hansen and Per Eklund. Kenneth who set the fastest time of the day in the last qualifying round had really turned up the speed. He makes an attack on Jernberg on the second lap. He makes the move over the crest and just manages to get into the lead.

As he overtakes a brake problem occurs on Kenneth Citroen Xsara and he is forced to slow down. And it was with the smallest margin he is able to stay in front. When Kenneth gets back from the slower part it was with only a meter left he stormed in ahead of Lasse Sällström.

- Puh, I made it, cheers Kenneth after the finish. It was really nice to win again.

It was Kenneth's second SRC win in a row and with this he tops the overall standings in front of Per Eklund.
The next round is in Haninge on August 15.

ERC Round 5
Finland, Hämenlinna. July 10-11

Hansen's marvellous drive didn't help

The sight of Kenneth Hansen when he in close to 200 km/h. on three wheels without fear comes storming down the gravel hill will probably remain on the spectators minds for a long time.

It was in the fifth round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship in the Finish Hämenlinna that the crowd got good value for their entry money.

The Norwegian Eivind Opland immediately took charge in the A-final. He was followed by the ERC leading duo, Kenneth Hansen and Per Eklund, who fought hard through the first couple of corners. Kenneth won that duel and set his sight on Opland.

But after one lap Kenneth gets a flat tire and it seems to be all over for him. Eklund overtakes him at once. Perhaps it was thanks to Kenneth getting his eyes on Eklund that he lifted his driving to an almost impossible level. Kenneth made an incredible drive on three wheels and managed to hold the rest of the field behind him until the last lap. Then first Lasse Sällström went by and just after the Finn Marko Jokinen.

- I gave all I had, said Kenneth completely exhausted. We have been working so hard after several big problems with the car. And then has the A-final to end with a useless fifth place. Sometimes it doesn't feel fair.

The European Champion in the little class, Eivind Opland took his first victory in the big category. Per Eklund was second and Lasse Sällström third.
Per Eklund extended his lead in the Championship to 15 points in front of Kenneth Hansen.
The next round will be in Belgium in one month.

ERC Round 4
Sweden, Höljes. July 3-4 1999

Hunsbedt won and Hansen had a bad crash.

The Norwegian Ludvig Hunsbedt won the Swedish round of the ERC. And he did it with a perfect run from start to finish. The Swedes Michael Jernberg, Per Eklund and Lasse Sällström had to settle for fighting it out for second, third and fourth place. Despite intensive attacks from Eklund Jernberg managed to hold on to his second place.

Kenneth Hansen finish only on fifth place in the B-final after a disastrous weekend.
In the first qualifying he missed the start. In the second heat he had a bad crash with Norwegian Eivind Opland. After extremely hard work by the team Kenneth came out to the third qualifying. There he had 6:th place and that only took him to the C-final. Kenneth won the C-final and got the last start position in the B-final. After a smart manoeuvre by Kenneth in the start he stormed up to second place. The Czech Pavel Koutny then pushed Kenneth off the circuit and he had to retire. Pavel got the black flag but that was little consolation for Kenneth.

Kenneth Hansen won the Swedish Rallycross Championship in Knutstorp

Kenneth Hansen won easily the A-final in the Swedish Rallycross Championship in Knutstorp. And it was his first victory in Sweden for several years!
- It feels very good to finally have been able to win on home ground again, says Kenneth with a big smile. On the Swedish Championship I have seemed to be struck with bad luck all the time. This was a good revenge. This time the others have been less lucky.

Three of the favourites, Michael Jernberg, Lasse Sällström and Lars Larsson, disappeared in the semi finals with different mechanical problems. Kenneth won his semi final and took pole position in the A-final. Beside him was Morgan Antonsson. Per Eklund just made it to the final despite an engine problem.

An incredible victory in division 1 by Kenneth Hansen in the ERC in Portugal has taken him closer to the lead of the championship. From the third row Kenneth made a perfect start and was ready to grab the lead when the others were fighting each other very wide into the first corner.

- I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the space on the inside, says Kenneth. I just dived into it and then I went flat out to get a few meters on Per Eklund who were on my tail. It was a wonderful victory and a nice revenge to France, smiles Hansen.

Another Hansen, Magnus Hansen Kenneth's nephew, also won the small category, division 2. This was the first victory for him in the European Championship.
- It was the moment of my life, laughs Magnus.

ERC Round 2
France, Faleyras. May 22-23 1999

Kenneth second after Jean-Luc Pailler in the French round of the European Rallycross Championship

A rocket start by Frenchman Jean-Luc Pailler from the second row in the A-final of division 1 took him up to the lead turning in to the first corner.
Kenneth followed him immediately very close from second position.
- I have never been so close to winning here in France, said a not to disappointed Kenneth after what happened on the last lap.
- When we had only half a lap left the engine started to misfire again, Kenneth explains. I was afraid the same thing would happened again as in Czechia two weeks ago, when the engine stopped only a couple of corner from the finish line. But somehow I made it to the finish this time.

During the final Kenneth were all over Jean-Luc trying to overtake. Two times he was halfway through but had to back off in the last moment.
- I was much faster than anyone else during qualifying and really on good form for this final. I wanted so much to win here in France, since I never have done that with my Citroen, Kenneth says. But OK everything can happen in a final and so it did.
Per Eklund hold on to his third place the whole final despite a massive attack from Michael Jernberg on fourth place.

ERC Round 1
The Czech Republic, Sedlcany. May 8-9 1999

Kenneth on fourth place in Czechia after giving Eklund a hard fight for the victory.

A brilliant start from the second row by Per Eklund took him into the lead of the A-final in the opening round
of the European Rallycross Championship in the Czech Republic.
As they here turn into the first corner there isn't anything Kenneth or Pavel Koutny, who were in the first row,
can do to prevent Per to snatch the leading position from them.
Kenneth and Per had a great show until Kenneth had to retire only a couple of corners from the finish line.

Kenneth had the second start position in the A-final and a brilliant chance. In the start it was Eklund who did the best start and squeezed between Kenneth and Pavel Koutny from the second row. Per took the lead after the first corner and Kenneth hanged on to second place. Michael Jernberg, Pavel Koutny and Marko Jokinen followed the leading duo.

Kenneth were like a shadow to Eklund trying everywhere to find an overtaking opportunity. On the last lap he where so close but all of a sudden the engine didn't get any fuel. The car slowed down and first Koutny and then Jernberg passed Kenneth only 100 meters from the finish line.

- It feels rather bad, says Kenneth's unhappily. I don't know what happened but its hard to be so close and then so to say loose it on the finish line.

SRC Round 1
Tomelilla. April 24-25 1999

Kenneth retired after a crash in the A-final

With Kenneth on pole position in the first race of the season he looked forward to race his rivals in the all important A-final.

But as the field stormed into the first corner the inevitable crash took both Michael Jernberg and Kenneth Hansen out of the race.
And as has the last races in the Swedish Championship Kenneth's pole position turned to disaster.
The A-final restarted with only three cars. Per Eklund managed to win the after holding the interesting new driver Lars Larsson behind him after chasing him hard.

- We just can't keep on starting on one row with those machines we have, says a deeply disappointed Kenneth. Sometimes I believe it has to end with someone being injured before the ASN can change the regulations. We, the drivers has pointed out this for more than a year, so when will they listen to us who risks our life?

The opening round of the season was, except for the last final, a nice experience. It answered many questions and proved that the team has progressed and work well during the winter. Kenneth won all his heats and some small adjustments were only needed.

New regulations.

The reason to this boost for rallycross is to be found in the new technical regulations. The regulations for division 1 are now based on the WRC, World Rally Car. Now you are able to buy a competitive car from a manufacturer instead of building yourself, which of course has limited the numbers of potential winners. The difference between a rally car and a rallycross car is to the last ones favour, as you in rallycross are allowed to use engines with 500+ bhp compared with railing's 300+ bhp.

Division 2, the smaller category, is based upon the F2-concept, that is 2-wheeldrive and 2-litres engines in standard cars. This class is probably going to grow new division 1 stars for tomorrow. From Sweden, Kenneth's nephew Magnus Hansen, will be driving a Citroen Xsara VTS in competition with BMW, Seat and Peugeot.
