FIA European Rallycross Championship

Kenneth Hansen won the ERC-silver

You could almost feel the dramatic tension in the air when the three competitors for the ERC-silver lined up in the last A-final of the 2010 season. It was still an open affair between Kenneth Hansen, Liam Doran and Michael Jernberg, who all had the chance of taking the second place in the European Championship.
Kenneth Hansen was determined not to give up without a fight and he made a tactical great A-final and was the one to take the silver medal.

- Fantastic feeling! Hansen cheers after the race. After one of the toughest season in a long time it is such a great thing to manage this. And as always this is and will always be a team effort who gave us the silver.

Kenneth Hansen started third and had Doran in the row in front of him, while Jernberg was just behind him on fifth spot. Hansen got off the starting line brilliantly and challenged the new European Champion Sverre Isachsen for the lead as they reached the fist corner.

Kenneth’s team colleague Liam Doran was unfortunately forced to give up early with a problem with the transmission. Despite the set-back in this race Doran surprised everyone this season as he constantly improved his driving all the time and at the end was one of three to fight for second place overall.

Hansen, who had been quick all weekend, played his joker lap all ready on the first lap of the A-final. After that he could focus fully forward on catching up. Of course he wanted to win, but the most important thing for the championship was to keep Jernberg behind. Therefore everyone got surprised when Jernberg choose to go for the joker lap at the same time as Kenneth.

- When I saw him following me into the joker I first couldn’t believe my eyes, Kenneth says. It was a big relief when I realized it and then I had a feeling that I would probably make it, despite it was four laps to go before the finish.

Sverre Isachsen won the A-final ahead of his fellow countryman Frode Holte. Kenneth came in on third place. Jernberg finished fourth both in the race and in the championship. The bronze went to the Englishman Liam Doran, who ended on the same points overall as Jernberg. The two had the same numbers of victories and second places during the season but Doran won thanks to more third places.

Johan Larsson, in Division 1 A, who also drives in the Hansen team, made a really good race in the Czech Republic. He started third in the A-final after three convincing and strong qualification heats. In the A-final it got a little too crowded in the first corner. Johan went wide and came out last. He fights his way back and finished fifth after the winner Andreas Bakkerud (N). Johan finished sixth in the European Championship for Division 1 A, a place that looks promising for the future as this was his first year, with the aim to learn the game.

FIA European Rallycross Championship

Kenneth Hansen third in Poland

In the Polish round of the European Rallycross Championship was Kenneth Hansen team colleague Liam Doran unstoppable. After a remarkable drive he won the A-final ahead of the Norwegian Frode Holte and with Kenneth Hansen on third place.

- I’ll have to be satisfied with the podium today, Kenneth summarizes the race.
- Liam did it really well. That Holte would come up to take the lead in the start from the back row was both rather unexpected and disquieting.

Sverre Isachsen (N) who had pole position spun off at an early stage of the race. He was not to upset about it as he secured the 2010 ERC-title with his fifth place today.
Kenneth had a somewhat messy beginning to the A-final, where the three Swedish drivers Hansen, Michael Jernberg and Andreas Eriksson had a big fight in the first corner and lost space to the ones in front.

Hansen went on the tactically so important jokerlap already on the first lap, which made it possible for him to focus on catching up and overtaking. Jernberg was a bit quite this race and came in on fourth place. Eriksson had to retire with a broken steering after some contact with Doran.

With only one round left of the Championship, in the Czech Republic on September 18-19, there is still a lot at stake. Sverre Isachsen has already won the ERC-gold, but the battle for second place is still wide open between Kenneth Hansen, Liam Doran and Michael Jernberg. Only seven points separates them, so count on some hot feelings and tough fights when it will be settled next weekend.

Kenneth Hansen second after a strong recovery

Kenneth Hansen did a strong recovery in the German round of the European Championship and went on to take second place after a strong drive, just a car length behind the winner Sverre Isachsen.

Hansen was only third on the start grid for the B-final after a tough qualification. But, Hansen didn’t give up and managed to pass both Michael Jernberg and Frode Holte to go on and win the B-final. That gave him the last place on the grid for the A-final.

- I was really feeling strong for the A-final, Kenneth says. I knew after the B-final that my Citroen was excellent to drive and it gave me a great confidence.

Kenneth Hansen did a fantastic start in the A-final and went on the outside of every one and pulled in as the leader into the first corner.
- Then I just felt someone slamming into the side of me, Kenneth explains. Myself, Sverre Isachsen and Liam Doran was pushed off by someone coming from behind.

In the restart Hansen did a fine start again. He took the joker lap on the first lap and with a great pace he challenged Isachsen through the whole final. With only a car length Isachsen beat Hansen over the finish line.

- Feels good with a success again after last weekend’s setbacks in Belgium, when we missed the A-final, Kenneth is happy to admit. But…It was the victory I wanted. I think we have a powerful car at the moment and that we should be able to bring home some victories now.

Liam Doran, teammate to Hansen, started on the front row beside Isachsen after making a brilliant job in the qualifications. Liam, who is getting stronger each race has lately been the only one to match the speed of Sverre. Had it not been a messy beginning to the first start Liam had been up there fighting for the victory or at least the podium again.

It was a big drama behind Hansen in the A-final. Liam Doran was forced to retire early after going off the track. Stig-Olof Walfridson and Andreas Eriksson had a fight over how rallycross should be driven. It ended with Eriksson in the gravel trap and Walfridson rolling in on fourth place. The young Norwegian Mats Lysen thanked the two by overtaking them and grabbing third place.

Hansens second place today moved him up two places in the overall standings to second position. On September 10-12 it is the next race in Poland and the week after the final round in the Czech Republic. Isachsen is a hot candidate for the ERC-title, but still everything is open. Between Kenneth Hansen, Liam Doran and Michael Jernberg there is only three points so we are likely to see a thrilling end to this season.

Results A-final Germany

Kenneth Hansen missed the final

Kenneth Hansen was one of the fastest during practice in Maasmechelen in Belgium when the European Rallycross Championship got going again after the summer break.
Hansen, who was close to win the previous race in Finland four weeks ago, had this time nothing but a top finish in mind.
Unfortunately the happiness was short. During qualifying Kenneth had a minor collision with the Czech Pavel Koutny. It damaged the car and Hansen had difficulties controlling it.

- It was not a big thing, Kenneth says. But it took a while before we realized what the problem was and by then we had already reach the finals.

Kenneth qualified only as third into the B-final. A victory was then a must to be able to get into the A-final.

- I finished second, Kenneth says disappointed.
- I did a super start, was out second and had a better pace then the leading Frode Holte. When I rejoined after the joker lap I was held up by the Frenchman Jean-Luc Pailler and lost some valuable seconds. And there the chance to enter the A-final disappeared.

Hansen team colleague, the Englishman Liam Doran, had a much better day finishing second overall after yet another strong drive this weekend. It was the Belgian Francois Duval who won the race.

Johan Larsson started in pole position in the smaller category, division 1 A. Johan missed the start and instead it was the Russian Timus Timerzyanov who went on to grab the victory.

Next on the race agenda is Germany and the eight round of the Championship on August 14-15.

1. Francois Duval (B) Ford – 20 p.

Kenneth Hansen’s roller-coaster weekend

Kenneth Hansen is back on track. After some difficult races is the multiple champion Kenneth Hansen back in the hot zone. Hansen was quickest in the qualifications of the Finish round of the European Rallycross Championship and started from pole position in the A-final. Kenneth was also the one to take care of the lead already from the first meters, but then Hansen was hit heavily by the reigning champion the Norwegian Sverre Isachsen. Hansen had a tire explosion and was forced to slowly and disappointed make his way to the finish line.

- Sad to end such a good weekend, Hansen says. We have been working so hard to get here again and that’s why it feels so unfair with only a fourth place.

Despite the bitter ending to the race Hansen was rather happy about the progress and to be able to be quick again and able to outdrive the opponents on the track.

- Great feeling to fight for victories with our own power, Kenneth says and already looks forward to the next race.

Sverre Isachsen didn’t manage to get away with the victory but got black flagged for his hard treatment of Hansen. In stead Hansen’s Citroen-colleague Liam Doran steps up and snatches his first ever ERC-victory.
- We are very happy and proud of Liam’s brilliant victory, Hansen says with a smile and tells how he has seen the young Brit develop race by race since he joined the Hansen-team at the beginning of the season.

On second place came Ludvig Hunsbedt, while the other Swede in the A-final, Stig-Olof Walfridson took the last podium place. Michael Jernberg was excluded for jump start.

Next race coming up in the European Rallycross Championship is in Belgium on August 7-8.

Results of the Finish Round of the ERC

Kenneth Hansen on second place in a thrilling Höljes final

Kenneth Hansen gave Sverre Isachsen a real fight in the A-final of the European Rallycross Championship. Hansen was forced to deliver a top result to keep the Championship alive. With a fantastic 28.000 spectators around the Höljes circuit Hansen showed some good old fighting spirit as he and Isachsen battled.

- Everything was perfect in the A-final, except that Isachsen won, Kenneth Hansen says with high pulse after the finish.

Hansen started from the fourth position but was immediate showing his determination by climbing up to second place behind Sverre Isachsen already after a couple of corners. The two had a blistering fight in front.

- I had super speed during the opening laps and felt that I was delayed behind Sverre, Kenneth explains. Therefore I choose to take the jokerlap rather early. And I did not want the ones behind to catch up as me and Sverre were fighting.

The timing of the jokerlap was a brilliant, but it also gave Sverre the time to breath again and made it possible for him to go flat without having to worry about Hansen. Sverre Managed to keep it together and took another win.

Behind the top duo it was chaos. Into the last corner the American Tanner Foust takes his team colleague Andreas Eriksson off and gets a black flag for it. Instead the Norwegian Frode Holte could easily pass and take the third place. Eriksson finished fourth while Michael Jernberg, who couldn’t make it work in the A-final, was fifth.

The hard work the Hansen-team had put in lately to develop the Citroen has paid off.

- We are clearly in the right way and I felt in the A-final that we can continue the season from a better position.

Next race is in Finland already next weekend.

ERC overall standings after 5 rounds
1.
Sverre Isachsen – 77 p.
2. Michael Jernberg 69 p.

FIA European Rallycross Championship

FIA European Rallycross Championship

Kenneth Hansen on the podium in Hungary

After an eventful rallycross weekend in Hungary, Kenneth Hansen finished on third place after getting both one and two knock-outs on the way there.

- A third place is a decent result in this race, as I have been going both back and forward on the track and up and down in the result lists, Kenneth says rather worn out after a hard weekend.

Sverre Isachsen won, again a bit sharper than the rest of the field. Michael Jernberg was second just in front of Hansen. Stig-Olov Walfridson had a good race and came in on fourth place. Jos Kuypers and Ludvig Hunsbedt had the last two places in the A-final.

Kenneth Hansen began the first heat with a retirement. He was in the lead but got a hard hit in the side and the rear, flew off the track and crashed. The team managed to repair the car during the night so that he could get his revenge with a fifth time overall in the second heat. In the last qualification round Hansen found himself in the hot zone again and spun. He fought back strongly and was able to get the last place into the A-final.

- After the two last races we can see that we need to get more power in the engine, Kenneth’s summons the competitive situation. And we need to find evolutions as soon as possible as we have the Swedish round of the Championship in only a month.
We have a new engine concept but we need to update it to the level where Isachsen and Jernberg are to be able to fight for the title as we want to.

Results A-final, Division 1
1. Sverre Isachsen (N) Ford – 20 p.
2. Michael Jernberg (S) Skoda – 17 p.
3. Kenneth Hansen (S) Citroen C4 – 15 p.

FIA European Rallycross Championship

Kenneth Hansen on strong second place in England

Kenneth Hansen took a strong second place in the Brittish round of the ERC.
- Now it begins to look good again, Kenneth smiles after the tough A-final at the Lydden Hill circuit.

It was the reigning champion Sverre Isachsen from Norway who was the unbeatable today.

Isachsen went for a clean sweep, winning the A-final by leading all the way from start to finish. He heads the overall standings now in front of Michael Jernberg, who this time missed out of the A-final. Kenneth took a step up and is sharing third place with his team college Liam Doran from England.

Kenneth who has started the season with a third and fifth place in Portugal and France, showed in this race that he has raised both his game and improved the car.
- My Citroen has got a new powerful engine, and I feel also young and strong, Kenneth says with a sparkle in his eye.
- So now we are hopefully back in the top where we want to be.

The A-final was as exciting and intensive as rallycross usually is. Hansen followed Isachsen from the start, chasing him as hard as he could. Francois Duval from Belgium was third during the beginning of the race. Liam Doran and the Swede Stig-Olof Walfridson took the joker lap on the first lap. Doran was really quick on his home circuit and overtook Duval to third place. Even if Liam closed in on Hansen he did not managed to get ahead of the experienced champion. Hansen hold his position and with only a few meters margin Hansen managed to get out of the joker lap and take a strong second place. Walfridson finished fifth. The American Tanner Foust was sixth in the A-final.

Next weekend it is time again for the fourth round of the championship in Hungary on
June 5-6.

Kenneth Hansen frustrated on sixth place in France.

Kenneth Hansen was not so happy after the A-final of the European Rallycross Championship in France. The poorly prepared track caused a lot of dust that minimized the sight for everybody except the leader.
- I have not planned to hurt myself in this sport, Hansen says irritated.
- It is very dangerous to drive in such high speed as we do and not to be able to see more than 15-0 meters in front of the windscreen.

An obvious mistake with the track preparation by the organiser made the gravelparts making a compact wall of dust when the cars passed at race pace. If the reason was a bad preparing technic or bad anti-dust material is not known, but for sure it put the drivers safety at stake.

It was Michael Jernberg who took a new victory ahead of Sverre Isachsen on the Kerlabo circuit. Kenneth Hansens team mate Liam Doran, who se the quickest time during qualifying, finished on third place.

In the A-final Hansen started from the back row and in combination with the poor visability and bad tactics for the joker lap Kenneth was not the fastest one to reach the finish line this time and came in only on sixth place.

- I hope the remaining organiser listen to the criticism from the drivers concerning the track preparation so that we do not need to talk about this problem again, Kenneth says.

Next race is in England on Lydden Hill on May 30-31.

Kenneth Hansen on the podium in Portugal

Kenneth Hansen 2010 Kenneth Hansen Heat 1 in Portugal 2010

Kenneth Hansen finished on third place in the opening round of the European Rallycross Championship in Portugal. It was another Swede, Michael Jernberg, who won ahead of Norwegian Sverre Isachsen.

- It was not the beginning I had pictured for myself, Hansen says somewhat disappointed both at the result and on the fact that the track conditions were highly dangerous due to dust.

Hansen, who started second in the A-final, felt strong and challenged Michael Jernberg, on pole position, for the lead as they raced each other down the start straight. Jernberg had the benefit of the inside so Hansen chose to take the joker lap at once. When Hansen rejoined the circuit Sverre Isachsen had moved up behind Jernberg.

- I was driving flat out, Hansen remembers, but as I closed in on them it was like driving straight into a wall of dust. I took a lot of risks, two-wheeling several times, as I tried hard to see the track at all. The speed was there but the poor visibility made it impossible to get the proper contact with the leading duo.

Kenneth Hansen’s teammate, the Englishman Liam Doran, finished on fourth place and was the best rookie. Swede Stig-Olov Walfridson finished fifth and Andreas Eriksson took the sixth and last place in the A-final.

- The positive end to this race is that we now can look forward to the rest of the season with confidence, Kenneth says.
- The development of the car and engine has gone in the direction we wanted and I feel we have a strong car that we can win with. Now it “only” remains for me to do my job and to have that bit of good luck needed to take back the ERC-title.

Next race takes place next weekend, May 8-9, in Kerlabo in France.

Kenneth Hansen ready to race

Kenneth Hansen  Hansen aims for winning back the title in 2010

Kenneth Hansen is ready.  Ready to fight for yet another European title in rallycross. It can be his15:th. But just because he has many victories before it does not mean that things gets easier. On May 1-2 the opening round of the European Rallycross Championship takes place in Portugal. Then the great Champion of the sport takes a deep breath and focuses on winning again.

- I am looking forward to get in the car and take the pulse on the other guys, Kenneth says with a glance at his Citroën C4.
- We have worked on a new engine strategy for two years and now we are have brought it to a hopefully successful finish. It looks promising. I will really enjoy the feeling of the Citroëns lively 540 horse powers.

The Hansen team has done several days of testing already and is planning to peak the form with some more testing in France next week, as they are heading for the first race in Portugal.
- This year I’m not alone in the team, Kenneth says. We have strengthen the team with the 23 years old Liam Doran from England. I think we can be very strong together with my routine and experience and his hunger and energy.

Kenneth Hansen aims for winning back the ERC-title after last year’s third place. But that is not the only goal Hansen Motorsport has.
Kenneth’s son Timmy Hansen, 17, will drive another year in the Formula BMW Europe. With one year of experience in racing and with high ambitions he is also aiming to win the series.
Little brother Kevin, 11, is as goal-oriented as his father and big brother. An overall victory in the South Swedish Karting championship is what he wants.
And then we have Johan Larsson, 24, who also drives for Hansen Motorsport in a Citroën C2. Johan makes his biggest commitment ever in the Division 1A in rallycross, the one just under Kenneth’s class.
In the Swedish racing cup for juniors, JTCC, Hansen Motorsport has yet another young talent under its wings. Andreas Wernersson, 16, will make his debut in a Citroën C2 and with his great successes in karting he will surely go far.

- With all these fantastic youngsters in the team I can’t be anything but inspired and motivated to bring on the best in me and drive for victory, Kenneth says with a smile.
- Or just to prevent them from saying I’m too old…
